"Indifference Kills Slowly" - Paulo Zerbato/2010

Κάποιοι κλαψουρίζουν αξιοθρήνητα, άλλοι βλαστημάνε χυδαία, αλλά κανείς ή λίγοι αναρωτιούνται: αν είχα κάνει κι εγώ το χρέος μου, αν είχα προσπαθήσει να επιβάλλω τη βούλησή μου, θα συνέβαινε αυτό που συνέβη;

Watching For The Storm

Illustration for the Blog: Tiempo Para Grace

A Time For Grace
(Our baby girl has been diagnosed with Trisomy 18. This is the story of our journey with her.)

Watching For The Storm

Kind friends continue to touch base and ask, "How are you doing? How are you feeling?"

Well, most of this week, and especially last night, I have been going to bed super late! That often happens when Ruben works the night shift; but it also happens when I´m worried or preoccupied about something. I stay awake (often keeping busy with emails or following news on the internet) until I can´t keep my eyelids open any more...I think it´s a defense mechanism against thinking too much!

In addition to not sleeping much, I also haven´t been eating well this week either, another small way to try to control my circumstances. That symptom usually pops up when I´m under stress. While I´m not feeling particularly stressed, apart from any other normal pregnancy, these behaviors of mine reveal the concern that is mounting about the coming storm.

In these first days I have been pretty positive when I talk to people. It has been genuine, not contrived. Part of that is due to a real trust in God, part is due to the many prayers that others have offered for us, and part of that has been just a stubborn will and sheer determination to never drown in depression and grief again.

The last major crisis that we lived as a family was a life-threatening car accident in May of 2007. In that situation there was no warning. It was a head-on collision that broke both of Ruben´s legs and tore my intestine which resulted in emergency abdominal surgery and kept me in the hospital for 2 weeks. Several long months of slow healing and recovery followed. I was overwhelmed with the grief of physical suffering and loss we experienced due to the carelessness of someone else. Part of me just doesn´t want to deal with that again. Haven´t we lived enough suffering for a lifetime already?

Of course, I know that grief is healthy and important and not really something to avoid; but until the actual moment comes, I´m trying to focus on the positive (which also involves NOT thinking too much about the negative) and at the same time hunker down and prepare for the winds and waves on the horizon.

Sometimes I try to balance my experience by remembering that I am not the only one who has suffered or will suffer. There are moms and dads who must have suffered much more than I ever could...like, for example, mothers and fathers in Rwanda and other war-torn countries who lost children and their own lives in the evil of genocide; or like the families in Somalia, Ethiopia and Kenya that are fighting right now for the lives of their children in the midst of last summer´s drought and famine in East Africa.

But you know what experience I´ve lived that was worse than any car accident? It has been living a period over the last few years of dryness and distance from God, which some refer to with a spiritual term called the dark night of the soul. You know what came out of my mouth last night with lips quivering as I fell into bed, exhausted and facing the reality of my concerns? "Jesus, please don´t leave me in the midst of this. Please don´t leave me." That would be far worse than other difficulty or problem I could ever face.

In fact, He has promised me that He hasn´t left me, that He never has and that He never will. As I was writing this entry I was reminded of an important encounter that He had with his disciples. Some of the things He imparted to the disciples as he was preparing for his own suffering and death included:

"I will ask the Father and He will give you another advocate who will help you and be with you forever....I will not leave you as orphans. I will come to you." (John 14:16, 18)

"I am the vine. You are the branches. He who remains in me will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing...If you remain in me and I remain in you, ask whatever you wish and it will be done for you. This is to my Father´s glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples." (John 15: , 7, 8)

"I have told you these things so that in me you will have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33)

So, I watch and wait, claiming His presence, His goodness, His power, His love for us and focusing on that. When the time comes, I will fall apart. I will sink down deep. I´m almost sure of it....but He will be there with me. He will catch me. He will not leave me....and He will overcome it. He will redeem it. Therefore, for as long as I can, I WILL worship Him and I WILL celebrate this little life in me with everything I have!

By the way, I had my last ultrasound 12 days ago. The doctor told me that there was nothing flowing through the baby´s umbilical cord, it´s main life source for nutrition and oxygen. I supposed that she would not live more than a few more days. Of course, it´s still early....but as of today she´s still alive and she´s kicking and moving.

God is the giver and taker of life. He, not the doctors, have the final say. While they are knowledgeable and helpful, I look to Him to guide us and to mark out the days for this baby. As we walk through this journey with our baby Grace, I´ve found new meaning in the words of King David of Israel....

"For you created my inmost being: you knit me together in my mother´s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be."
-Psalm 139: 13-16

Mindless Humming Or Not So Mindless? Our Sabbath

Illustration for the Blog: UFC Christ

"Mouth Speaks What The Heart Is Full" - Paulo Zerbato/2011

For those of you that were having trouble picturing the idea

Mindless Humming Or Not So Mindless? Our Sabbath

...........

Ok, so, now some of you are saying: "What does this have to do with the Snoop/Mars song? What does being consistent have to do with simply humming mindlessly a song like that?" The answer is nothing, and everything. Let me explain. The Bible states that: "For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of." (Matthew 12:34). Many people have used this verse in many ways, some say that this verse is meant to teach us that we should speak good words, instaead of foul words (like using the f-word for example), some say that this verse is meant to teach us humility in the presence of God, for if one has a heart full of God one will only speak of God and not one's self, etc. However, if you study this verse closely and see who Jesus is speaking to you will find it very hard to interpret it in any of these ways, specially the bad words' interpretation (hope no one is getting offended by this, and I hope, if you believe truly that this verse means for us that we shouldn't use bad words, that none of those nasty words have escaped your mouth while reading this).

Jesus is talking to the Pharisees and if you study Matthew chapter 12 in it's entirety you will see that Jesus has had two big confrontations with the Pharisees in this chapter. First, they tell Jesus that it is unlawful for his disciples to pick some grain for them to eat on the Sabbath (for those of you how don't know what the Sabbath is, please check out this wikipedia note: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Biblical_Sabbath, but really quick it means the day of rest that the Jews observed as part of the law of Moses), second they tell Jesus that he is Beelzebul (which means, literally demon prince or is just a reference to Satan himself) because Jesus healed a man on the Sabbath (yes, the same one as the one they were picking grain to eat). After these two encounters Jesus makes a powerful statement calling the Pharisees to repent of their wicked paths since they are clearly not understanding their calling, and Jesus ends this statement with the line in Matthew 12:34: "For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of."

To live happily, we need to know ourselves. Our needs primatial and living in society, certainly stands out: the need for a pure soul: we can only be totally happy if our neighbors have, in turn, their basic needs to live with a future worthy of their front not only survive.

Therefore, it behooves us important mission: to illuminate the paths for other that are walking and to are grope in darkness. And there is no need to have diplomas, but understanding, knowledge, dedication and love.

Randon Thoughts In A Digital Age

Illustration for the Blog: Teifidancer

"Deprivation Of Freedom Of Expression" - Paulo Zerbato/2011

Randon Thoughts In A Digital Age

As Michelangelo, the great Italian composer,
once remarked: Artists have responsibilities.
Hearing music is like contracting a disease,
a beautiful infection. It brings closer
the point of no return. One must be strong.
There's no such creature as a harmless song.

Painting too, as the English artist Shakespeare
pointed out, can be debilitating
unless you aspire beyond paint to real things.
A painting freezes movement. The eye, like the ear,
is a channel of impotence. Mere airs and graces
often induce an unproductive stasis.

And as for words, I only need quote Mozart,
the Swiss poet: They're tainted by unreason.
Language is discourse, words slippery. To seize one
we must lay traps, as for mice. The throat's part
of the respiratory tract, and you may clip
a speech, like air, by tightening your grip.

Too many of you are wasting your time and ours
with gewhaws, bric-a-brac and frolicking.
It's time to give you all a rollicking.
We're not impressed, I fear, by your endeavours.
The role of the past is to prepare the future
and your task is to welcome it with Culture

Research and Theory on Family Violence

Illustration for the Blog: CDSOC325

"Look A Look" - Paulo Zerbato/2010

Chapter 3: Research and Theory on Family Violence

APRIL 20, 2012 by COURTNEYTD
The first chapter I am choosing to look into is Chapter 3: Research and Theory on Family Violence. I chose this chapter because it is important to remember the domestic violence effects everyone in the family, even if the violence is not directly happening to them. This chapter looks into research methods used to collect data regarding family violence, and the sources of that data. It also looks into different violence theories such as the Family Violence theory, The Classical School perspective, The Positive school perspective including biological and social and psychological aspects, the Conflict School, and Multidimensional theory.
Article
I found an interesting article regarding a specific outlook on a theory of violent behavior. It is titled: The Identification of Implicit Theories in Domestic Violence Perpetrators.

.....

Research/Findings

“Each of the interviewees described beliefs about their position in the world, which suggested that they felt threatened by others. These beliefs extended to their relationships with their partners, with many describing these women as demanding, hysterical, or manipulative. The need to always win an argument (even when they knew they were wrong) was a prominent feature of these accounts. A number of themes in this category were identified, including the belief that violence is normal, that the world is untrustworthy, that women are unknowable, that “I am always right,” and others related more generally to emotional volatility.” (Dempsey).

Each participant talked of a history of violence in their families and/or with their peers. All the participants also reported feeling that the world was an untrustworthy place. They also each expressed a belief in sticking with their arguments even when they knew they were wrong and feeling attacked by anyone who disagreed with them. The article goes into great depth about particular beliefs each participant held about their lives and the lives of their family members. Also the research dives into where these feelings are rooted in the abuser’s past., thus examining the history of the violence and the given situations. “The results of this study offer some preliminary empirical support… that the implicit theories of domestic violence perpetrators are likely to be similar to those that have been identified in studies of other types of violent offender.” (Dempsey).

Drawing
I found a drawing that I thought fit the idea of the history of violence well.

drawing credit: (Zerbato)

I think this picture does a great job of illustrating the way children learn to see the world through the eyes of their parents/guardians. Hence, a child who experiences violence in their home might learn to view the world that way and may very likely exhibit violent tendencies later in life.

Narkoba dan Psychological State

Narkoba dan Psychological State
By Ferry Silitonga

Illustration for the Blog: Blogui - Lapsos Literários

"The Power To Release Or Withhold The Wisdom Of The Great Mysteries" - Paulo Zerbato/12

Sanity Related To Transcending Confusion: Bringing It Back To Life's Simple Evolutionary Tools

Illustration for the Website: Yoganonymous

"Peace Of Mind" - Paulo Zerbato/2011

In our current age, technology and the massive size of civilization itself have made complexity into a normal and constant experience within our everyday lives.
By Johnathan Raiss

With millions of humans being packed together in tight spaced mega structures known as cities, which require all goods (for the most part) to be mailed in over vast distances for citizens’ survival, along with huge fossil and radiation fueled energy systems required for transport, temperature control, and communication, along with an endless myriad of other factors required to exist in tandem with the prior, it is the simple truth to state that life has become inconceivably complex, and this trend is certainly not on a downward slope.

It is considered normal behavior to focus on multiple completely unrelated and extraneous subjects and phenomena all at once, even if one’s activity is geared toward relaxation. We have become numbed and used to the bombardment of information that hits us everyday through cell phones, television, the internet, etc., and for what is the use and benefit of this consistent attack on ourselves by ourselves?

Purpose in life, for many is the driving factor and/or inspiration for their continued effort at existence in this wild world. A purpose could be a reason to live for, whether it be religious-serving god or whoever, ethical-serving and helping others, environmental- preserving and appreciating the planet, or hedonistic-pursuing pleasure and experience for the sake of itself. All of us, even at our most suicidal moments have some purpose driving us, which whether we know it or not, is concurrent upon our understanding of reality.

Our understanding of reality may be that life is either carefree or harsh, full of love or dependent upon strife, equalizing or extreme, melancholic or exuberant to name a few. These may be over simplifications, but I have found personally that the process of description and analysis becomes a trap most of the time, rather than a tool. Yoga can be method of superseding the traps of the mind, and finding a calm source of clarity in the midst of the storm.

que quase se esvaiu
na nuvem atômica.
Salvaram-no o acaso
e os pacifistas
com sua homeopática
atitude
— nux-vômica.

4. Aqui jaz o século
que um muro dividiu.
Um século de concreto
armado, canceroso,
drogado, empestado,
que enfim sobreviveu
às bactérias que pariu.

5. Aqui jaz um século
que se abismou
com as estrelas
nas telas
e que o suicídio
de supernovas
contemplou.
Um século filmado
que o vento levou.

6.Aqui jaz um século
semiótico e despótico,
que se pensou dialético
e foi patético e aidético.
um século que decretou
a morte de Deus,
a morte da história,
a morte do homem,
em que se pisou na Lua
e se morreu de fome.

7.Aqui jaz um século
que opondo classe a classe
quase se desclassificou.
Século cheio de anátemas
e antenas, sibérias e gestapos
e ideológicas safenas;
século tecnicolor
que tudo transplantou
e o branco, do negro,
a custo aproximou.

8. Aqui jaz um século
que se deitou no divã.
Século narciso & esquizo,
que não pôde computar
seus neologismos.
Século vanguardista,
marxista, guerrilheiro,
terrorista, freudiano,
proustiano, joyciano,
borges-kafkiano.
Século de utopias e hippies
que caberiam num chip.

9. Aqui jaz um século
que se chamou moderno
e olhando presunçoso
o passsado e o futuro
julgou-se eterno;
século que de si
fez tanto alarde
e, no entanto,
— já vai tarde.

10.Foi duro atravessá-lo.
Muitas vezes morri, outras
quis regressar ao 18
ou 16, pular ao 21,
sair daqui
para o lugar nenhum.

11.Tende piedade de nós, ó vós
que em outros tempos nos julgais
da confortável galáxia
em que irônico estais.
Tende piedade de nós
-modernos medievais-
tende piedade como Villon
e Brecht por minha voz
de novo imploram. Piedade
dos que viveram neste século
— per seculae seculorum.

Counter AA 12-Step Program

Illustration for the Website: The God Murders

"A New Human Being Is Born" - Paulo Zerbato/2009

(The content of this text is the responsibility of the author and not necessarily I agree with the opinion and his point of view! Paulo Zerbato.)

Counter AA 12-Step Program
By Gary DeVaney

The Gary DeVaney Version of the Alcoholic 12-Step Program.

This is Gary DeVaney's 1-12-step counter to AAs 1-12 step program as a result of this question. Is Alcoholics Anonymous just another denomination of the Christian sect? They believe in a higher power / God.

AA Version First. Gary DeVaney's Version Second

1. We admit that we were powerless over alcohol - that our lives had become unmanageable.

1. I now know that I am addicted to a feeling. I now admit that I have the power to identify and control my genetic feeling(s) that craves alcohol.

2. We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

2. I now know that my taking control of my genetic feeling(s) can control my sanity.

3. We make a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, as we understand Him.

3. I have no evidence of any supernatural God. I now have decided to take charge, identify, isolate and control my damaging, genetic feelings. I now know that as long as I won't - I can't.

4. We make a search and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

4. I now will identify, isolate, control, re-program and shut-down my genetic feeling(s) that crave alcohol.

5. We will admit to God, to ourselves and to another Human Being the exact nature of our wrongs.

5. I now accept my responsibility to identify and isolate my addicted, genetic feelings. Through my habit of drinking, I have reinforced those feelings and they have loyaly obeyed my will and my actions. I now will learn and change my will and to change my behavior. I will now command my errant, genetic feeling(s) to stand down.

6. We are entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

6. I now will consciously order my feelings to re-program my ever-evolving genes to shut-down the addicted feeling(s).

7. We humbly asked God to remove our shortcomings.

7. I now will consciously re-program and supervise my genes to shut-down and control my addicted feeling(s). As long as I will change, I can change.

And continues ......

"Thought Crime" Infiltrates Britain

Illustration for the Website: Another World Is Possible...

"Prevent The Free Expression" - Paulo Zerbato/2011

"Thought Crime" Infiltrates Britain

Posted in 10/01/11
by Roy Ratcliffe

During 2005 in Britain, a group of influential writers published a book entitled ‘Free Expression is No Offence’. It was published by PEN, an organisation which declared it;; ‘champions freedom of expression everywhere and the right of writers, artists and indeed anyone to say whatever they feel without fear of persecution or penalty‘. The editors and contributors to this volume, were energised to put pen to paper in order to defend the hard won enlightenment right to free speech. The catalyst for their essays was a government proposal to restrict criticism of religious forms of belief. The government were at the planning stage of creating an offence of ‘Incitement to religious hatred‘. More recently, in August 2011, two young men were convicted and jailed for suggesting on face book that a riot should take place. A riot did not take place and the two youngsters in question did not turn up at the proposed venue. No crime had actually been committed except a newly contrived crime of thinking and writing words someone didn‘t like.

So something is happening to the principle of free expression in the UK. In the 21st century, the ‘establishment’ in England (right wing and liberal) had clearly lost its grip on the economy and now seemed bent on losing its grip on rationality. Not two months after the above ‘reactionary’ punishment, apparently a solidarity movement in the UK decided to refuse its members the right to think or say anything which denied any aspect of the received Holocaust’ narrative or diminish the importance of it. Let me declare my own position on this insidious and dangerous precedent of outlawing free expression. I have taught holocaust studies and that I think those who deny the main outlines of the genocide perpetrated against Jews, Socialists, Trade Unionists, gypsies, Slavs and Jehovah’s Witnesses by the Nazi’s are wrong. However, although I may disagree with everything such revisionist writers suggest, I will defend, and others also ought to defend, their right to express their views. Why? Because to turn the clock back to previous centuries of mind control where those in power decide what is acceptable and what is to be outlawed and criminalised, is a far more retrograde step than the expression of any view considered offensive, by no matter whom. Let me explain why I think this might be so.

Mera Ruh Tak Mujhse Rootha Hua Hai!

Illustration for the Blog: Rkay's World Of Thoughts!!!

"In Search Of The Soul" - Paulo Zerbato/2010

Mera ruh tak Mujhse rootha hua hai!

Nile aasman ke taleh yeh badal jaise karvate le rahe hai,
Bechainiyon ka aalam mere dil mei kuch aise hi rukh le raha hai,
Anjaan se is ehsaas se,Sab bejaan lag rahe hai,
aankhein khuli tho hai par sabki pehchaan dhund raha hai,
na jaane yeh waqt kaisa imtihaan le raha hai...

yeh panchi aaj kaisi dhun suna rahe hai,
mere bachpan ki kahaniyon ke sathi aaj kyun duur jaa rahe hai,
Yeh titli, yeh patte, yeh paudhe mujhe dekhte hi kyun murja rahe hai,
Mulayam hawa ke jhonke ko mehsoos karna kyun mushkil lag raha hai,
Yeh baarish, yeh boonde, yeh nadiyaan kahin bichad rahi hai,
Yeh galiyan, yeh chaubare mujhe alvida keh rahe hai,
mera gharonda mujhse khafa ho raha hai...

Zinda toh hoon mei par mera dil bhi aaj mujhse ruksat le raha hai,
Toofan mei datne wala aaj sahil ke paas aane par bhi ghabra raha hai,
Kya aaj mera dil ro raha hai, isse yeh kaisa dard ho raha hai
aankhein khuli tho hai, sab dekh rahi hai fir bhi kyun anjaan pesha rahi hai,
dua mangu bhi tho kaise mangu, mera ruh tak mujhse rootha hua hai!!!

The Story Of An Hour

Illustration for the Blog: Mackevelli

"The Weight Of Oppression" - Paulo Zerbato/2010

Symbol Of Opression

In “The Story of an Hour” by Kate Chopin, A heart troubled Louise Mallard is informed that her husband died in a fatal train crash. Stricken with grief, she runs up stairs and locks herself in her room. She sinks in a chair and stares out the window at the clouds. She sits there, caught up in deep thought, thinking about her relationship with her husband. Finally, it it came to her mind that she is now free from a controlling husband. Delighted with this new-found epiphany, she decides to leave the room and go back downstairs. Back in the living room, you hear a knock on the door. They open the door and see Mr. Mallard standing there unharmed and with out any knowledge of the train crash. Louise then has a heart attack which kills her.

The author compresses immense amounts of emotion into the time span of only an hour. The themes of this story are freedom and oppression. She did love her husband; however, “There would be no powerful will bending hers in that blind persistence with which men and women believe they have a right to impose a private will upon a fellow-creature.” (“The Story of an Hour” pg.14 ). This quote implies that her husband was controlling. She realized that she would be free from now on and looked forward to the upcoming years of her life. The story was written in 1894, a time where women didn’t have many rights. Louise was oppressed in the very society she lived in

The Knock

Illustration for Blog: Felix Fojas
A literacy and all and sundry blog

THE KNOCK by Felix Fojas
Los Angeles
Jan. 18, 2011

Last night there was
A mysterious knock
From inside my chest.
“Who’s there? I asked
Politely. “It’s me,
Your soul,” the tiny
Voice answered. “How do
I know you’re telling
The truth?” I said
Suspiciously. “Because
I’m the only one
In here. Do you hear
Any other voice?”
“No, I guess not,”
I replied. “So let
Me out,” the voice
Pleaded. “It’s time
For me to get out.
I’m mighty bored
In here.” “But what
Happens if I set
You free?” I asked.
“Nothing much. You’ll just
Expire, my bosom pal.”
“Then you can stay
In there forever.”
I said decisively,
Put a double lock
Outside my chest,
And threw away the key
Into the ocean blue.

DBT Workbook: Distract Yourself From Self-Destructive Behaviours

Illustration for the Blog: Pride In Madness
Discrimination, Trials and Triumphs in Mental Health

"Self-Destructive Behavior" - Paulo Zerbato/2010

DBT Workbook: Distract Yourself From Self-Destructive Behaviours
Posted by prideinmadness

After Radical Acceptance comes Distraction!

The first exercise is identifying ways that I would be willing to distract myself. The book listed 10 possibilities and chose to try 7 of them.
  • Write on yourself with a red marker, red pain, red nail polish (have done in the past).
  • Draw faces of people you hate on balloons and then pop them.
  • Write letters to people you hate or to people who have hurt you.
  • Throw foam balls, socks or pillows against a wall as hard as you can.
  • Scream into a pillow (have done in the past).
  • Stick pins in a voodoo doll or other soft object.
  • Cry (have done in the past…obviously).

I tried writing a letter yesterday when I was angry but I ended up writing how I can’t change anything because the person won’t change so we may forever be in this cycle and I just became more upset…..

I did not pick any Distractions that require pain. I don’t care if the damage isn’t permanent, I want to begin to train my brain to not respond to pain as a stress reliever. I’ve done the ice cube and hated how all I could think about was hopefully causing permanent damage by freezing something. I’ve tried digging my nails into my skin and just ended up drawing blood. The worst is the rubber band. Fine, the bruises go away but I hate having to look at the welts and the purple of my skin that still take a few days to go away. The pain tactics need to STOP!

I’m not one to gradually go off of something. I need to stop a behaviour right away. I quit smoking cold turkey and took the shit that came with nicotine withdrawal and I didn’t die so not having pain wont kill me either even though it feels like it.

I can’t believe I’ve trained my brain to associate relief with pain. How did that happen? I’ve been thinking lately about how stupid it is that we need to feel hurt and sometimes almost die to feel like we’re alive. Sounds like a contradiction….needing death to feel alive. I guess it’s a reminder but still.

Anyways, this is the skill that I will really need to practice.
